Understanding Your Coverage for Home Care and Senior Support Services

At HOPE Professional Services Inc, we help individuals and families make the most of their long-term care insurance (LTC) benefits. Whether you’re planning for future care or currently need in-home assistance, understanding how LTC insurance works is the first step to receiving the services you deserve.

What Is Long-Term Care Insurance?

Long-term care insurance is a policy that helps cover the cost of care for individuals who need assistance with daily living activities due to aging, illness, injury, or cognitive decline. It helps pay for services not typically covered by health insurance or Medicare, such as:

  • In-home caregiving

  • Personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming)

  • Meal preparation and feeding

  • Dementia and Alzheimer’s care

  • Respite and hospice care

  • Transportation and companionship

How It Works – Step by Step

1. Policy Activation (Benefit Trigger)

Before you can use your LTC benefits, you must meet the eligibility criteria, usually requiring help with 2 or more Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as:

  • Bathing

  • Dressing

  • Toileting

  • Transferring (e.g., from bed to chair)

  • Eating

  • Continence
    OR

  • A cognitive impairment diagnosis (e.g., Alzheimer’s or dementia)

A doctor or nurse may need to provide an evaluation.

2. Elimination Period

This is a waiting period (often 30, 60, or 90 days) after services begin, during which you are responsible for paying out-of-pocket before benefits kick in.

3. Covered Services

Once approved, the policy will pay for eligible services — often up to a daily or monthly dollar limit. Coverage may include:

  • Hourly caregiver assistance

  • Skilled nursing visits

  • Hospice care

  • Light housekeeping

  • Transportation

  • Personal care aides

4. Payment & Reimbursement

  • Some policies reimburse you after services are rendered and invoices are submitted

  • Others may pay providers directly
At HOPE, we help file claims and manage all billing paperwork so you don’t have to.
